Twentieth century was drawing to a close and late Nirmalendu Dey, a leading gentleman of Malugram, Silchar, had a vision. He felt the need of an English medium school in this part of the town. There was no English Medium School in this area and he observed that the people of the area, by and large, had an urge to educate their children in the English medium. Those who could afford, sent their wards to the few existing English Medium School of Silchar, e.g. Holy Cross School, Collegiate School etc but for many parents and guardians the wish remained a begging. So, Late Nirmalendu Dey a great visionary set up a Kinder Garten School in his house hold premises.
The foundation was laid on the 31st January 1994 by Dr. Tapash Sankar Dutta, an eminent educationist of Silchar. A handful of tiny tots of the area were admitted in the nursery class. The band of teachers at that time worked very hard to rear these children in learning process. The sincerity of teachers satisfied the people and they found an institution at their doorstep which could provide the initial education of their children. Classes were added one after another and more and more students came to be admitted in this school every year. People were happy to find an institution where they could entrust the education of their children in safe and deft hands. Many guardians could not find seats for their wards in other English medium schools of the town and many found that they could not afford it for commuting the distance or for pecuniary circumstances. So, the school grew up from primary to upper primary and then to the Secondary stages and I joined the school as a teacher of English Midway in 2004 I took over charge of the Principal from Smt. Arundhati Som, who built up this institution with great care and efficiency with motherly affection and pedagogic efficiency she reared the institution from its incipient stage to its early youth. Since her departure in 2004 the onus fell on me and with great dedication and expertise and the co-operation of teachers, I have built up this institution hitherto.
The first batch of H.S.L.C. candidates appeared in 2005 and since then the institution has flourished as a full-fledge high school. The admission of new students increased in large number and managing authorities of the school, the Daffodils Educational Trust, constructed a new four-strayed building to accommodate the increasing number of students. All essential amenities have been provided and there are as many as fourteen smart-classes in the school. We are one of the pioneers in opening smart-classes in Cachar district. Above all this infra-structural developments, the competence and expertise of our teaching staff is our forte. The sincere efforts of our teachers have paid rich dividends and the students of Daffodils have excelled in different curricular and co-curricular activities and earned laurels in various competitions held in Silchar and elsewhere. Some of our students excelled in All-India competitions. In 2016 our school team of students comprising Daisy Pathak, Subhadeep Purkayastha, Rumana Akhtar won the second prize in the all India Piditlite science project competition held in Mumbai. This was a great achievement because nearly 1200 schools from all over the country participated in this competition.
In the scholarly domain our students have shown outstanding results in the H.S.L.C. examinations. Our students have won distinctions, star-marks, letters galore in the H.S.L.C. examinations held from time to time. It is conspicuous here to mention that in 2010 Baishakhi Suklabaidya of our school secured a place in the merit list of successful candidates and in 2017 Daisy Pathak of our school narrowly missed the mark. Daisy Pathak made us proud as an ex-student of the school this year by securing the 2nd position in the Higher Secondary Examination in Science 2019.
The bright alumni of the school have made their marks in different fields and we feel proud of them. Some of them have become doctors, some engineers, some research scholars, some teachers in schools and colleges, some social workers, some serving in different offices. Wherever they work in Government offices or private organizations they have made their marks in their walks of life. Over the years we have received full co-operation of the parents and guardians who have reposed complete faith in us for the education of their wards. It is relevant here to mention that the doors of Daffodils School are open to all. We take students from all strata of Society. Not all are affluent. But see the results- the raw material, and the finished products in the learning system of the school. Daffodils has served the people in fulfilling their academic aspirations over these twenty five years of its existence and I firmly believe this school will continue to shine in the firmament of education by providing quality education.Over the years the school has grown up with the co-operation of lovers of learning and patronization by some eminent educationists of the area. It is conspicuous to mention here the affectionate association of Ms. Joya Deb, an eminent educationist and Principal of South Point School, Silchar, with this institution since its establishment. Over the years the school has received her benediction and guidance. She is the author of our school song and her vision as a poet that she depicted lyrically in the school song seems to be perennially manifested in the philosophy of the school. I recall with gratitude her love and best wishes for this school and look forward to receive the same for ever.
The garden of daffodils has sustained through sunshine and rough weather. It has not been all sunshine all the way. There have been turbulent times occasionally but every time the school has risen to the occasion to negotiate adverse circumstances and come out with flying colours. The sapling of daffodilsplanted in 1994 has grown up to be a flourishing tree. Today as we celebrate its glory on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee it is my fond hope that this academy will kindle the lamps of learning for all times to come.
Mr. Subrata Dey
Principal, Daffodils School
